Gunn Oddsdottir, Errant Adventurer and Battleborn of Mildred

Gunn Oddsdottir (Dahl'Haran?, 2234 a.a.H. - ?) was a Battleborn adventurer whose adventures spanned many centuries and regions. First seen during the Rivierie as a warrior siding with Disette Rivier, she often served as a hired sword or independent adventurer, siding with various sides during the turbulent years leading up to the Second War of the Power.

Early Biography[]

Family[]

Much is currently unknown, with some potential anachronisms. Gunn's birthdate has been established at 2234 a.a.H. She is meant to be a second generation Battleborn, 'artificial demons' created by the High elves of Dahl'Haran in the image of elves, with the blood of elves, but to fight demons.

The high elves did much experimentation with captured demon Soul Stones and Soul Shards during the First War of the Power. This research starting years before the Battle of Polforia, and during that long campaign and the longer following sieges. The elves did all they could to learn about the demons and to try and uncover weaknesses. They were long unsuccessful, but they apparently did learn how to reverse engineer the process to clothe captured soul shards into new bodies as 'demons who would fight for the allies'.

These demons were the Battleborn, who looked like large and tall elves who appeared much like strong warrior versions of the stereotype Golden High Elves, but with retractable wings to appear 'angelic'. The wings would fold up and be pulled into the back, a magically empowered shapeshifting ability shrunk and reformed the large wings so as they would retract. The first prototypes of battleborn were created in adult form shortly after the war was over, presumably, these first generation battleborn gave birth to sexually derived children only a few to several years after their own 'birth'.

Gunn Oddsdottir was one of these first progeny. She had a non-identical twin sister named Hild.

House of Dameth[]

Gunn, her sibling, Hild, and her parents spent a time serving the House of Dameth of Huncle. Close relations between the Humans of the Five Kingdoms of the Northwest, and the High elves had become frayed shortly after the end of the 1rst War of the Power, a process of eroding good will that started long before the war was over. It is surprising the High elves would lend out their new weapons?

However, for a generation or so after the war, a great colonial effort was made by the Five human kingdoms of the northwest of the continent of Aels, and the High elven Empire of Whide Axis to settle the land of Polforia, planting the often short lived Polforian states. There was much mopping up of Demons and Orcs of the defeated Dark Legion who were often actively resisting the human restoration of the Five Kingdoms, and the colonization of the large, often grim land of Polforia. There was also simple chaos created by vast numbers of multi-race bands of bandits, and Polforian peoples whose lives were utterly disrupted by the fall of the Dark Legion and the loss of control and order.

It is entirely possible that the High elves lent their creations to human nobles so as they could be tested by fighting 'in the field'. To clear the Five Kingdoms of orcish stragglers and Polforia of demons as a test of the battleborn and to protect colonists? No kingdom needed more help than the northern kingdom of Huncle, and its new polforian colony called Ester Gate, at the east side of the Dargoina Mountains. Also, the High elves, in the war a human generation earlier, chose to free the Five Kingdoms after the lands to the south of Aels, to much disagreement and animosity to their principal human allies who were from the Five Kingdoms. So, debts of earlier agreements and compromises might have had to be repaid?

Gunn Oddsdottir was apparently born in the High elf city of Dahl'Haran, but she grew up in Huncle. Circa 2248 a.a.H., it is known that she played with some human children and was associated with the social disruptions caused by the past war and the orcs left behind. Plus the young orcs, and half orcs, born after the initially successful Dark Legion invasion and occupation. With a later irony, peasant children that Gunn and Hild had in a little adventure with against a small gang of boys led by a half-orc boy called Half-Blood would prove to be principals of a great peasant revolt called the Rivierie that would begin ten or so years in the future.

Rivierie[]

As a young adult, by 2258, Gunn was closely involved with the politics of the domain of Dameth in Huncle, and the southeast of Huncle in general. As Dameth had a large elven population it is likely that she also was involved in relations between the two races? The Grey elf population in positions of nobility in a human kingdom was the principal reason why the battleborn family was assigned to Dameth. Gunn was personally sworn to serve Lady Jackie de Dameth of the large elferie located in Oster Gate, who, in turn, was joined to the Marquisette of Dameth by marriage.

Continued depredations of bandits and disruptions caused by war with Sargos did much to create misery that the kingdom of Huncle, with its weak central authority and strong nobles, could not properly deal with. Hence, Dameth was an important leg of authority and control; but, despite fair competence, used heavy handed methods too many times, and in 2258 a.a.H., led to popular uprisings becoming known as the Rivierie.

Aging at a slow rate due to being part elf, Gunn was now aged to a physical development of about 17 years old at 24 years old. Young Gunn was sworn to defend the House of Dameth, but was now in a civil war, with the House of Dameth also divided against itself. This would ultimately lead to hard choices leading to Gunn to support the peasant revolutionary leader Disette Rivier, (with a possible personal interest in the rebel woman?) and a disillusionment of betrayals and politics within the House of Dameth, the elves and humans, nobles and peasantry, and in the ultimate crushing of the Rivierie in 2260.

Mildred[]

At some point in time later in the 23rd Century, Gunn Oddsdottir came to live in the fortified Grey elf town of Mildred, in the frontier country of Erenian. This was a land east of the south Osorio River, south of the Southern branch of the Dargoina Mountains, in the western Barlans. The country was colonized by humans from Sargos and Degoland, and had a very large proportionate population of Grey elf and Half Elf peoples. Gunn lived in Mildred for several years as a town guard and militia-woman. It is unknown if her family survived war with Sargos or were speaking to her following events of the Rivierie in Huncle to the north, north-west. (Or, indeed, if they had survived even to the time of the Rivierie.)

Later History[]

At some point in time, probably following the events of the Rivierie, Gunn was quit of the House of Dameth, and possibly of her allegiance to the Empire of Whide Axis? Albeit, she might have continued on with duties for fighting for elves in Aels and Polforia for a long time? Perhaps her time in Mildred as a guard and militia-woman represented a new assignment as that would have been perfectly logical given that it was essentially an Elferie town in a newly colonized land? In any event, well over a century after the Rivierie, Gunn still lived in the five kingdoms and Polforia, still fighting, but as an adventurer and mercenary with few pretensions of noble purpose.

Monster Hunter and Spy[]

A Monster is often a class of creatures known as Abominations, essentially as wandering, living weapons left over from the War of the Power long before. Great fighters and hunters would form teams that would go and kill these hulks. Of course, 'monster' is a relative term, and might also apply to any of the Orcs of Polforia, or certainly Ogres and Trolls. Or Dragons, or demon-folk such as Vampires and Werewolfs.

By the early 2420's (and quite probably for many years before) Gunn was well familiar with the Polfiros Kanovs, the Moradi Ozcuras and Polforian Blood Elves and was generally employed as a 'monster hunter' in destroying monsters that inhabited Polforia. While doing such work, she was actually an intelligence operative, though precisely who she reported to is unknown. It might have been Spy Masters from Whide Axis, or the kingdoms of Sargos-Degoland or Huncle.

Circa 2428 a.a.H., having killed and taken the armor of a succubus, and being part of a spy ring into the Blood Elf nation of Daiman'Yar, Gunn had killed a monster threatening Morodi villages and became short term mentor of sorts for a young Layla the Slayer, supposedly teaching her about swordplay but largely teaching her about hair braiding.

White Fang[]

In 2431 a.a.H., a farm headed by a Kanov named Dutvkkar was raided by werewolves of the clan known as the White Fang, the White Fang being long regarded as the most dangerous and isolationist of the werewolves. Dutvkkar lost family members and many inhabitants of the farm (which had many family and non-family members like a hamlet), and this raided, landed farmer demanded retribution and the help of his liege, Ruthkarnd the Bear. Dutvkkar could not be put off, and Ruthkarnd was tired of the White Fang's depredations and its Alpha, Hel the Oathbreaker, and he, and another Kanov warlord named Burdovarr the Kinslayer, joined their available forces, and mercenaries, and gathered a credible fighting force of hundreds of Kanov warriors and a few others to fight the werewolves.

In hopes of having a decisive battle, Ruthkarnd also contracted with several Monster Hunters so as to track the werewolves down so they could hopefully not escape them should they not wish to fight. Werewolves often being able to raid at will, and then slink away. Gunn Oddsdottir was one of the monster hunters who arrived. In the end, the monster hunters were not needed, and surprisingly, there was no fighting. Hel had already been deposed and killed, and the White Fang was willing to treat with the Kanovs and pay restitution for the attack, and also for some of their past actions of their long history of raiding and territorial expansion.

However, this was the time when Gunn would encounter the adventurer Bog and his daughter on the journey into White Fang territory and the werewolf lair of the Howling Keep. Gunn would also first learn of the half-were Pumori of the White Fang when Pumori was a young child.

Bogilla Sybill'innu[]

Gunn would remain associated with Bog and his daughter, Bogilla Sybill'innu, for some time. Bog might have become a sporadic lover as well, and she amazed him with her clothing techniques. Gunn had developed an interest in the man's Half Elf daughter, Bogilla, perhaps extending into a personal interest. Particularly in Bog's attempts to train Bogilla to fight, and the girl not happily responding to him.

It was observed by the warlord Ruthkarnd that perhaps the father and daughter were not well suited for each other, and another should train the girl. It would seem that Gunn stepped into the role for a time as she saw that the girl had potential.

Note: Much is ultimately not known of this relationship with Bogilla. Early creative discussions suggested that Bogilla might leave Bog for Gunn to be trained by her, or even be kidnapped from him. Conversely, there was a second line of, perhaps incompatible, continuity of the father and daughter having an adventure in the desert in the south of the continent of Aels, quite some distance away. Neither seems to have come to pass, or both might still be possible.

In canon, Bog and Bogilla seem to have stayed together for at least some more weeks and months. Later, about 2440, Bogilla would be living as a young woman amongst elves of the northern forests of Nubla near the east coast of Aels. Both her father, Bog, and Gunn, having moved on, leaving her there? It is unknown how much Bogilla would interact with Bog and Gunn after that. Bogilla seems to have been absent in the story of Pumori's slave revolt which included both Bog and Gunn that took place in 2437, despite the presence of at least one old associate of Bog from the Adventurers' Guild of Zannas. That would suggest that Bogilla might have have been left in Nubla prior to 2437?

How long or how little Gunn mentored the girl is not yet well established, but Bogilla would become an adventurer herself.

Roccasone Slave Revolt[]

However, it was revealed that in early 2437, Gunn was with Bog together with some of Bog's sometimes companions from his days as in the Adventurers' Guild of Zannas years earlier. They were staying in the city of Roccasone, the capital of the petty kingdom of the same name. This was one of the two remaining Polforian states of the several colonies that were being planted in Polforia back around when Gunn had been born some two centuries earlier. Such is the lifespan of an elf, or Battleborn at least, that in her lifetime, settlements had grown to become realms, that had either withered and died, or survived only to die later. Roccasone was one of only two remaining.

Roccasone was a country that had slavery. Upon looking through the city, Bog was horrified to see that the little mixed blood girl he had helped back in 2430 and 2431, Pumori of the White Fang, was now a slave gladiator in a theatrical amphitheater turned into a fighting pit. Bog observed her fight, and then investigated the situation, and aided in a slave revolt that Pumori and other slaves had planned.

While Gunn was perhaps predisposed against demons, even werewolves, she chose to aid in the slave revolt with little or no hesitation. This is somewhat poignant in that she was choosing the side of 'demons' or common Demon Servers races over a colony that was established to prevent their rise, a colony that she was, in effect, born to defend; particularly as the demon lords captured in the First War of the Power had escaped in 2434 (two centuries after her birth). But she had both self determination to follow her heart, and heart enough not to only serve herself, as there was no monetary gain to be made in a slave revolt.

With the help of Bog and Gunn (and friends) Pumori and her fellow slaves succeeded in overthrowing most of the city, and then she and many other slaves departed into Polforia.

Howls[]

Many years later, circa 2460, in the midst of the Second War of the Power, after the early campaigns had abated, Gunn would see the adult Pumori, who had become the alpha of the White Fang. Pumori had created the new city of Howls around the old, but rebuilt, Howling Keep. Gunn seems to have carried on chaotic, dissolute, drunken behavior and burned down the only tavern! Behavior that had long become part of her character.

It's not known what she was doing at this time as part of the war. She was now a 'weapon' created to serve the elves and the allies of the Empire of Whide Axis staying in a Dark Legion city. She no longer much worried about her past purposes, and perhaps occasionally passed through Howls?

End[]

It is not known when Gunn dies, or by what means. However, the character's creator, Kanyiko, once expressed the idea that she did not live beyond the Third War of the Power and The Cataclysm of 2675. Whether she died in that war or years before, is not known.

Creator[]
