Larqven - Nortender Map 2

The State of the Nortender Order was a monastic state formed by the Nortender Knights or Order of Nortender during the Middle Human age along the Bay of Hieyokscream. The state was based in the duchy of Priva after they were invited to help in the defense of the duchy at the 2296 a.a.H, but also expanded to include most of the historic regions of the Amazons Tribes in northern Polforia and parts of Navatiak. Most of the territory was conquered by military orders, after which northwestern aelianization occurred to varying effect.

History Edit

Creation of the State of Nortender, 2296-2320 Edit

The Duchy of Priva, first amazon Christian state since its official conversion at the 2254 a.a.H suffered continuous wars and raids by the Helzar tribes of eastern Hieyokscream Bay. Weakened and open to attacks, much of their southern borders were being depopulated, as population sought refuge further inland, abandoning the border to bandits and pagan barbarians.

The creation of the State of Nortender originates in 2296, when Connie I, duchess of Priva in north-western Polforia, appealed to the Knights of the Order of the Holy Sword of Nortender to defend her borders and subdue the pagan Hieyokscream amazons, allowing the Knights use of the shores of the Estig and the Estige lands -what the Nortender will call Estigland- as a base for their campaign.

The Head of the Order, Uwe von Beem, who had seen his order and the human and elven settlements in Polforia to be pushed westwards, considered Hieyokscream a good training ground for his knights for the wars against the Remnants of the Dark Legion in central Polforia. With the approval of the archbishop of Karentia Freder II, it was bestowed on the Order a special imperial privilege for the conquest and possession of Hieyokscream, with nominal karentian sovereignty.

In the initial years, the Order sought an aggressive expansion with great success, taking the Estigland and both banks of the Estig already by the 2300s, which was accomplished with much bloodshed. Due to their success, they went beyond what had been the Privan Grant, and continued their conquest well beyond the original scope granted by Connie I, further in lands that hadn't been part of Priva.

As the power of the Order grew, the power of the duchess weakened.

While fighting the amazons of the highlands and the Hundred Lakes in the disputed lands, the Order began as well to ask for permission to deal with the pagans of the Amber Shores, nominally a Privan dependence that had refused conversion to Christianity-. The new, weakened Duchess Connie II, who expected that the subjugation of the Amber Shores would benefit her power accepted, and was opened a new chapter of the Order in the Amber Shores by the 2307.

The Head of the Sword, the Maestre of Nortender, considering himself to be the direct representative of the Karentian Church due to the special privilege granted by the Archbishop of Karentia: Freder the II, began to try to exert his influence in the election and investiture of the Privan bishops, who until that point had been mostly on the hands of the Duchess of Priva.

The elections of Nortendi candidates to bishoprics, and later these bishoprics becoming part of the order worsened the tensions between the Privan amazon nobility and the Order of Nortender.

As in 2315, the Bishopric of Cverri fell into the hands of the Order -along with most of its lands-, this was considered unacceptable by the Privan nobility, and the situation worsened to the point that an open war was expected. But the weakened duchess and the great nobility tried instead a diplomatic solution in the Treaty of Cverri.

In this treaty, the nobles who submitted to Nortender had many of their privileges affirmed. This solution between the higher amazonian nobility of Priva and the Highland Tribes and Nortender would keep the peace... for a moment.

The Amazons Uprising, 2320-2343 Edit

While the Treaty of Cverri established a modus vivendi between the Duchy of Priva, the Highland Clans and the Order of Nortender, the malcontent among the amazons for the rising power of Nortender continued, violently erupting as popular uprisings in 2320 in Privan and Nortendi territory, soon expanding not only among the Privans but as well the pagan amazon clans of the Highlands and the Hundred lakes, and later, the tribes of the Amber Shores.

Due to the extension of the uprising, many of the nobles who had previously pacted with Nortender, to avoid losing power over their subjects had to join the rebellion, to try to lead it, as was the case of the Duchess of Priva herself, Connie II.

Initially, the uprising was very successful, and was endangered the presence of the Order in the region, who had to retreat to their castles and count from support of the Five Kingdoms of the Northwest and Karentia, who initially condemned Nortender for their heavy-handed practices as being at fault for the uprising.

But the success of the revolt planted the seeds for its later failure. What united the rebels was a common enemy in Nortender for Privans and Free Tribes, for Christians and Pagans, for humans and non-humans. But as Nortender was cornered, the union of the rebellion was broken. Some of the pagans began to exert religious violence not only anymore against the Nortendi knights, but converted Christian amazons. As well, demonic-cultist tribes of amazons of the east began to pour over Nortender, Priva and the Amber Shores, supposedly to support the rebels, but raiding and causing further chaos.

While it hadn't any proof about this, the Nortendi claimed that the whole uprising had been orchestrated by the demonic Brotherhood of Tempo-Katzooine, which was denied by the Amazons.

Many of the amazon Christianized nobles, who had already pacted with Nortender in Cverri and had to take a leading role of a popular uprising to try to keep their position, will began to seek for a new compromise.

The executions of Christians and arrival of demon-cultists invaders, along with the alleged demonic involvement, Karentia will finally decide to act, and proclaimed a crusade to quell the rebellion and defend Christianity under attack, gaining in this way a much needed support the Order of Nortender.

Slowly but surely, Nortender and the crusaders of Navatiak, Outregam and the Five Kingdoms will recover all the lost lands, and conquer further territories.

However, often in recovered territories, due the forced conversions and repression, later new uprisings would rise, that would need to be subsequently quelled.

By the 2343, after the successful repression of the last major amazon uprisings and the official surrendering of the new duchess and high nobility of Priva, Nortender encroached over most of former Priva, with the exception of a small rump state that was little more than a Nortendi puppet. Much of the amazon nobility that survived the uprisings emigrated or were resettled, and many free amazons lost their rights.

Consolidation of Nortender Edit

The amazon noblewomen who remained after the Uprisings were more closely allied with the weseuros landowners and gradually assimilated: After 50 years of warfare and brutal conquest the end result meant most of the amazon tribes that resisted were either killed or deported.

To make up for losses from diseases, plagues and to replace the partially exterminated native population -and as long term to strengthen the weseuros elements- the Order encouraged the immigration of colonists from both the five kingdoms of the northwest (mostly Hunclech, Sargonic and Degolandic) and from the failed colonies in Polforia, which were being hard-pressed by demonic dark legion remnants.

The colonists included nobles, burghers, and peasants, and the surviving amazons and kdaimons were gradually assimilated. The settlers founded numerous towns and cities on former amazon and kdaimon settlements. The Order itself built a number of castles from which it could defeat uprisings of amazons and natives, as well as continue its attacks on the demonic remnants of Dol-Nur, Khar-bad and Tempo-katzooine, with which the Order was often at war during the 2300-2400.

The final nail to the coffin of the Duchy of Priva was after the death of Connie IV without succession, the rump Privan duchy was finally incorporated formally into the lands of the Order of Nortender at the 2386

Peasant and Burgher Uprisings, Campaigns to the East Edit

While Nortender had come to rule, directly or indirectly, all the lands of the western Hieyokscream Bay, things were far from perfect.

The cities that had grow into thriving trading centres wanted their political power recognized, and to be granted charters by the Maestre of Nortender, who rejected these demands, as was seen as key the tax revenue from them for further expansion plans of the order eastwards, to complete the conquest of the lands around the Hieyokscream Bay.

Meanwhile, the peasants felt oppressed by abuses of the order:

So, while the Order launched some ambitious raids deep into the east of Hieyokscream, began to erupt rebellions.

While the peasants revolts were crashed, the great cities were granted the charters and free city status they demanded.
